Daniel Radcliffe is opening up about his past issues with alcohol.
The 24-year-old actor said he drank to deal with the pressures of Harry Potter fame after he shot to stardom at the age of 11, even turning up to set drunk to film scenes. But, he soon found that drinking still didn't improve his state of mind.
"I would have benefited from not drinking as it was not making me as happy as I wanted to," he told Sky Arts in an interview that is set to air later this year ( Hello excerpted the interview).
"It is not a real pressure, but it is a pressure of living with the thought, 'Oh, what is all these people are saying I am not going to have a career? What if they are all going to be right and will be laughing and I will be consigned to a bunch of 'Where are they now?' lists?'"
Daniel previously talked about his alcohol abuse to ShortList magazine, saying that he used to drink so much that he often passed out. "Seriously, in the last three years of drinking I blacked out nearly every time. Blacking out was my thing. The drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life. That's beyond question. I was living in constant fear of who I'd meet, what I might have said to them, what I might have done with them, so I'd stay in my apartment for days and drink alone."Since his days of Harry Potter, Daniel have a very successful career, performing on Broadway and starring in films like The Woman in Black and Kill Your Darlings. And he's grateful that people know him for more than just the film franchise that made him famous.
"People don't shout Harry Potter at me now, they tend to know my name, which is lovely," he said. "But I will always credit the opportunities I get to Harry Potter. I would not be a happy person if I was bitter about those ten years of my life."
The thesp, who has abstained from alcohol since 2010, recently made his red carpet debut with his girlfriend Erin Dark at the 2014 Tony Awards. He also has three films in the works set to premiere next year, Frankenstein, Brooklyn Bridge and Tokyo Vice.
