The Glee star and her partner Derek Hough danced the Cha-cha-cha and took home 9's from all three judges, giving them a total of 27 out of 30 points. That is an almost perfect score on the first night of competition. It usually takes a while, like mid-season, for the stars to achieve a level deserving of those high scores, but this pair wasted no time at all!
Amber and Derek dazzled on the dance floor to "These Wings Are Made to Fly." Moving effortlessly, Amber sparkled in a silvery skin-tone fringe number typical of DWTS attire. The pair earned the highest score ever for a debut performance on DWTS, tying Amber with former competitors Kristi Yamaguchi, Mya and Aaron Carter. Kristi went on to win season 6 of DWTS.
Guess all those musical and dancing numbers on Glee served Amber well or maybe she has been getting advice from Glee's resident dance pro, Harry Shum Jr? She is certainly lucky to be dancing with four-time winner and reigning DWTS champion Derek.
Whatever the case, it looks like Amber is the one to beat this season on DWTS. Even Bruno Tonioli felt the excitement calling, Amber the "tigress of Season 17." You go, girl! But what made the night even more special than her score was seeing her Glee co-stars, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, cheering Amber on and giving her a standing ovation.
Amber's toughest competition may be High School Musical alum Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff and Saved by the Bell's Elizabeth Berkley and Val Chmerkovskiy. Both couples scored 24 out of 30. At the bottom of the score board was crowd favorite Bill Nye the Science Guy and his partner Tyne Stecklein, who received a 14 out of 30 dancing a "Weird Science" Cha-cha-cha.
So, are you as floored as the judges about Amber and Derek's performance? And do you think they will win DWTS? Remember the judges' scores are only one-half of the vote. Stay tuned. It looks like it's going to be a great season.
