'Short Term 12' stars Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. stopped by recently to chat about their new film, how it was working with the director and what their dream roles would be!Have you heard of Short Term 12?Short Term 12's writer and director, Destin Daniel Cretton, wrote the film based on his 2008 short film with the same title. The independent movie is about Grace (Brie Larson) who works at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers alongside her boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr). While the film is complex and dark, it finds truth and humor in unexpected places.
"It's not very often you get handed a script so beautifully complex," said Brie, "He [Destin] has a clear vision and also is very patient in allowing us to have our own interpretation of the material." John added, "I never felt pushed. It was one of the easiest collaborative unions between an actor and director that I've ever felt."
Brie watched the short film before taking on the big role, "I personally was familiar with foster care the same way that most people are, it exist and it's sad." But after shadowing the facility in real life, "You realize just how accurate and what an honest representation he created from the script."
John and Brie both had serious roles in this film, but we're not too sure how serious they are about their dream roles. "To reprise Val Kilmer's stage performance as Moses in The Ten Commandments," Brie told us. And John's sticking with his co-star, "I'll play the red sea."
Short Term 12 will be released in theaters on August 23.
