Devin Velez received the lowest number of votes on American Idol this week. Even after being eliminated and not receiving a "save" from the judges after his final performance last night, Devin still held his head high.
"I kind of knew it was going to happen," Devin told us. "In the end there can only be one winner, everyone has to go home at a certain time and obviously today was my time."
We couldn't help but feel the vibe that it was Nicki Minaj who stopped the judges from using their unanimous save. "I think I know who didn't want to put me through, but I don't know," said Devin. "She has a lot of girl power. The fact that the girls have been so consistent with their songs and having such high votes, the girls are amazing this year."
The other finalists said their goodbyes, but "I'm like 'Guys, stop saying goodbye. It's BRB (be right back), I'm coming right back,'" Devin said.
"I knew my solo performance was awesome, I heard it from Smokey," he said. But Devin couldn't recover from the group performance. "The fact that the group number came after [the solo performance], that's the last thing they remembered."
Three out of the four judges went up to Devin after the show (can you guess who didn't? Yup.) First to approach him was Keith Urban. "You were great, it was an honor to have you on the show," Keith said. Randy Jackson told Devin, "I want to keep in contact with you because you're an amazing artist."
The love for Devin from the room was undeniable. "I can still only smile about it," he said. "As long as the fans are with me, I'm unstoppable because I can't go to a stadium with no one to perform to."
And as if Devin wasn't already overwhelmed with the support and kind words, Mariah Carey added, "I would love sometime down your road to do something with you." Devin couldn't believe it. "Her heart was so sincere, and her tears were not of joy," he said. "But I got to wipe a few so I'm not washing this finger."
