It was Motor City (Detroit) week on American Idol, and the top 8 finalists had to choose a song with a Motown groove. Their mentor for this week? The legendary Smokey Robinson.
"I don't know what the tape showed, but when he walked in," Candice Glover said, "I couldn't take it. I was speechless." We wonder how she felt when he gave her this advice? "No matter how high your head gets in the clouds, make sure you keep your feet on the ground."
Devin Velez felt this week's pressure. "I can say that I was challenged. It didn't look like it from the song, but I don't listen to Motown," he said. "The version I did [of 'The Track of My Tears'] was Gavin Degraw's version, so it was a little bit more groovy."
One contestant switched things up with Smokey's "Shop Around." "It was fun doing a fast song. Sure it wasn't perfect, but I feel good about it," said Angie Miller. Angie's strategy when she found out this week's theme? "I called my parents and was like 'help me!' They sent me a bunch of fun songs."
Amber Holcomb earned herself a standing O with "Lately" by Stevie Wonder. "Everybody wants one and they've been really stingy about it lately," she said. "So to get one was really nice." Amber didn't hesitate on her song choice, "I knew that was the song I was going to do. It starts off so slow and it turns into something so big."
Kree Harrison continued to get it right, "The comments from both were great," she said about her solo and duet performances. "I had a lot of fun singing with Janelle." Kree also nailed it with "Don't Play That Song" for her solo. "I love singing Aretha, that's kind of where my heart was tonight."
After getting not-so-positive feedback from her duo with Kree, Janelle Arthur was happy with her solo performance with "Keep Me Hanging On" by The Sopranos. "I feel relieved that I got through it," Janelle said, "After hearing the negative comments, I was able to not let anything stop me from doing my thing."
