The top 8 finalists on American Idol split into three separate groups this week, in addition to their solo rounds, to pay tribute to Motor City (AKA Detroit). Not all of the judges liked what they heard, but we wanted to hear what the finalists had to say back.

The boys, Lazaro Arbos, Devin Velez and Burnell Taylor, took on The Four Tops' "I Can't Help Myself." Amber Holcomb, Candice Glover and Angie Miller performed "I'm Going to Make You Love Me" by The Supremes and Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur gave Madonna's "Like a Prayer" a country spin.

Poor Janelle spun out, according to Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. But Kree had her back. "I'm proud of Janelle because she went back up there and owned the stage in such a graceful way like she does," her duet partner said.

Janelle admitted that it was hard to perform her solo song after hearing the judges' comments, but, "You have to take the good with the bad," she said. "I'm getting to do what I love to do on the biggest platform, so I'm going to take the bad too. I can roll with the punches."

Amber, Candice and Angie all received positive feedback for their group performance, but that sure wasn't the case for the boys. Nicki even noted, "It's a beautiful day in Hollywood today because that's what this felt like," implying that their performance reminded her of Hollywood week. Ouch!

"The group performance wasn't so great," said Devin. "I knew my words and I'm not going to point anybody out." Though Devin didn't feel targeted, "You should never be offended if they're not speaking about you. I was on pitch, I was singing my words right."

We thought there might be some bad blood between the boys after their performance, but "Burnell and Lazaro, we're definitely here for a reason," said Devin.

Lazaro (who did forget his lyrics) admitted that he didn't have the best night. "I think I did bad," he said. "I love that they say what they want and what they feel. I don't like to use excuses to back myself up, but I never heard that song in my life."

"A couple of things went wrong, but it is what it is," added Burnell. "I thought this was going to be the one that stamps it and says that the boys are in it to win it. Even though we're in a group, as individuals, it made all of us look bad."

But he has strong faith in the boys. "Next week when it's a group song, we'll kill it!" Burnell said.
